ANSWERS-

1. The narrator's hobby is to read crimes and criminals. He considers it out of the ordinary because he likes to observe other people and thus, uses his eye and common sense more than other people use.

2. The narrator found the woman's behavior strange because she was staring at the Undertaker's Shop. He first thought that someone dear to her must have died but she didn't show any sign of mourning. She was wearing a yellow zig-zag pattern dress and yellow sandals.

3. The narrator found the lady's behavior strange because---

(a) She entered right at the moment the ring disappeared.

(b) If she had work in Regnier's, then why she was waiting outside so long.

4. No, she didn't drop the paper packet accidently, she threw it towards William Morris's side intentionally so that he bends to pick up and meanwhile she could take out the ring stuck to the chewing gum which was stuck underneath the the counter.

5. The narrator found the ring from the left hand pocket of the lady's coat.

He knew it was there by joining all the facts together in his mind, these facts are--

(a) The lady was waiting for a long time and staring the Undertakers.

(b) Americans don't come to Regnier's as a rule, the American don't know anything about antique jewellery.

(c) The lady was right handed not left and she brought a cheap brooch for repairing.

(d) She intentionally dropped the paper packet.


E. What impression do you form of William Morris?


Ans. William Morris is a highly observant assistant in a reputed jewellery shop. He makes full use of his common sense. Nothing escapes his sharp eyes. He considers himself a very ordinary person which reflects his honesty, humility and modesty. He has got an unusual hobby of studying crime and criminals. He is impressed by ordinary and alert detectives. He loves to watch people. With his presence of mind and observant nature, he was able to solve the case of the disappearance of the expensive flower ring.
