UNDERSTANDING THE PLAY

A. Answer the following questions in about 30 words each.

ANSWERS--

1. Mr. Hill was upset with Annie because she doesn't cook well and she had made a terrible coffee that day.

2. Mr. Hill expected to help Annie in cooking in parties.

3. We can say that Mrs. Hill was a kind-hearted, considerate lady because she was in favor of Annie as she knew that she is old and can't find a new job at this age and she was with them about 20 years ago. Mrs. Hill doesn't wanted to hurt Annie. These qualities of Mrs. Hill makes her kind-hearted and considerate.

4. Annie was normal after she came to knew that Mr. Hill had lost his job and didn't take any money as she knew that he had lost his job and told that she has saved some money and she will manage in it.

B. Read these extracts from the play and answer the questions that follow.

1. 'How will she find a new job?'

(a) Here 'she' refers to Annie and she should look for a new job because Mr. Hill was removing her from job.

(b) It will be difficult to find a new job for her because she had reached her middle age and she is now not be able to do these work in this age.

(c) The speaker react in such a manner because she was a kind-hearted woman and she knew how difficult to find a new job in middle age.

2. 'We had to do it, sir. We were only thinking of the bank.'

(a) Here 'Sir' refer to Mr. Hill. 'We' here are Briggs and Mr. Winter.

(b) They have written a letter to the head office about Mr. Hill to resign the job.

(c) Nobody in the office was happy because of him as he came late to the office and leave early and he also took 2-3 hours for lunch and doesn't works only the employees worked full day and he enjoys in his office.

3. 'But, George, why have you changed suddenly?'

(a) George was a rude, self-centred and arrogant man earlier.

(b) He became compassionate, considerate and selfless person.

(c) He had seen a dream that two person from his office came and told him that he has to resign from his job because he doesn't worked hard and is self-centred., because of these reasons these changes took place.
